Adidas launches Virtual Gear NFT collection

Adidas Original is launching its first digital wearable NFTs dubbed Virtual Gear, according to its Nov. 17 tweet.
The NFT collection is part of the brand’s strategy to accelerate its efforts in Web3 and ‘the adidas community-based, member-first, open metaverse pledge.’
Virtual Gear features 16 phygital items that can be used as virtual avatars and profile pictures across different Metaverses and identity-based projects. The designs are inspired by the brand’s previous partners Bored Ape Yacht Club, Gmoney, and Punks Comics.
This was already released to Phase 2 ‘Capsule’ (Adidas’ previous NFT drop) NFT holders, who can choose to burn their NFTs in return for an item from the Virtual Gear collection or wait until Phase 3 launches.
Those who do not own a ‘Capsule’ NFT can purchase Virtual Gear NFT on NFT marketplaces.
‘As a brand, adidas has always been about exploring the edges of creativity and pushing the boundaries to find what’s beyond. But Web3 offers our designers and collaborators a new outlet to imagine, and reimagine, how our brand can be represented in augmented and virtual worlds. Creatively, we’re extremely proud to say that this virtual collection represents more than just a historic first for adidas. It also represents an idea of wearable clothing that can transcend time and space, a community that is vividly diverse, and a level of utility that can be explored and even discovered as worlds and avatars take new forms,’ said the Senior VP of Creative Direction for Adidas Originals, Nic Galway.
In Dec 2021, the brand first launched its Web3 pledge with 30,000 Adidas Original NFTs and generated over US$ 23 million in sales in mere hours.
