Korean pop girl group Blackpink won the 2022 MTV Video Music Award for Best Metaverse Performance in PUBG Mobile.
After receiving over 320 million votes, Jennie Kim, Lisa Manobal, Kim Jisoo and Roseanne Park won the award for their virtual concert in July titled Blackpink: The Virtual.
In winning the Best Metaverse Performance category, Blackpink beat the other artists and groups nominated for the award, including K-pop group BTS for their performance in Minecraft, Charli XCX for her concert on Roblox, Justin Bieber’s performance on virtual reality platform Wave, Ariana Grande’s Def Jam, Rift Tour in Fortnite and Twenty One Pilots’ concert on Roblox.
‘We saw the opportunity to highlight and honour some of the best, most impactful executions of this – and celebrate artists who have found creative ways to use these spaces – which led to the addition of 'Best Metaverse Performance' category this year,’ an MTV representative said in a statement to The Hill.
PUBG Mobile is still currently hosting its first ever virtual concert with Black Pink which started from August 18 and will end on September 7. Players can participate in ‘special in-game event missions’ to earn points to redeem Black-pink themed merchandise.
