EBay’s first NFT collection will feature Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, created in partnership with Sports Illustrated and Web3 platform OneOf.

The NFT collection, available starting today in 13 limited-edition digital collectibles as green, gold and diamond-tier NFTs.

The Gretzky NFT collection includes 13 limited-edition digital collectibles as green, gold, platinum and diamond-tier NFTs. The prices of the NFTs range from US$ 10 to US$ 1,500, which is a 3D animation of Gretzky in his signature hockey moves. Some of the NFTs feature Gretzky’s autograph. eBay intends to drop more collections featuring more high-profile athletes throughout this year.

Gretzky played 20 seasons in the NHL over three decades and is the winner of four Stanley Cups.

‘Forty years ago, I was grateful to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, it was a monumental moment in my life,’ Gretzky said in a statement. ‘I'm honored to bring this collectible experience to my hockey fans who have followed my career for decades.’

‘Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is now making coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors everywhere,’ said the vice president of collectibles, electronics and home at EBay, Dawn Block, in a statement. ‘This builds upon our commitment to deliver high-passion, high-value items to the EBay community of buyers and sellers.’

EBay’s announcement comes at a time when its stock is down 33.4% to date. It is joining a growing list of companies looking to tap into the NFT market. Instagram recently announced they’re testing NFTs with some creators in the U.S. and Spotify joins the space with its NFT gallery testing on musicians’ pages.

OneOf is built on Polygon and Tezos Blockchains, both use the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. Ebay’s first NFT collection, however, will be launched on Polygon instead of the less energy-intensive Tezos.
