Popular language learning app and American educational technology business, has entered the Metaverse with the launch of its activation in Roblox to encourage developers to create their own language learning content in blockchain-powered virtual world Decentraland and online gaming platform Roblox and reminding learners to do their lessons.

Duolingo is the first language learning platform to mark a presence on Roblox and Decentraland. This is Dulingo’s efforts in improving its learning programs by making them more innovative and engaging.

The move follows as the brand noticed that Roblox players had created unofficial Duolingo gaming apps and avatars in the Metaverse. Its game-play videos have reached millions of audiences on Youtube. To reward these players, Duolingo is launching a game jam in partnership with digital marketing firm MediaMonks, that allows developers to submit their games for a chance to be featured. So far, the brand reviewed and launched over twenty games, all of which are now available in the Duolingo Game Hub Metaverse in Roblox.

Players will be earning twice or triple the amount of rewards compared to the developer/ community-created Duolingo games. Rewards come in the form of Duolingo’s in-game currency and its native token, Duo UGC, can be earned through playing games and can be used to buy virtual Duolingo merch, including digital wearables such as backpacks, hats, masks, bodysuits and even an owl to bring pets to your virtual store.

The brand has also put in place a billboard that shows the brand’s green owl mascot holding a push notification, which will remind users of the mobile app’s daily lessons.

Duolingo’s entrance into the metaverse follows in line with other edtech companies that have launched VR language immersion programs, including ImmerseVR and MondlyVR. However, Duolingo is the first to enter the Metaverse.

Duolingo’s Creative Director Brand & Marketing James Kuczynski, said, ‘Traditionally, brands activating in the metaverse create their own environments or worlds for others to engage with. However, in the case of Duolingo, a brand beloved by many including Roblox, we wanted to create an experience that gave fans the power to create something with our brand and beloved owl character, Duo, that they would enjoy and share with friends.’
