MTV adds new ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ award for VMAs

MTV, the music channel’s long-running awards show, has just announced a new category for the Video Music Awards (VMAs) for the August 2022 edition of the annual music video showcase. The award category is titled ‘Best Metaverse Performance.’
The nominees include BLACKPINK, BTS, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Charli XCX and Twenty One Pilots. One of these artists will receive a Moon Person for their virtual performance in various platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite. The initiative came after MTV realized artists were increasingly starting to interact and connect with a global audience through the Metaverse.
‘We saw the opportunity to highlight and honor some of the best, most impactful executions of this — and celebrate artists who have found creative ways to use these spaces — which led to the addition of ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ category this year,’ a MTV spokesperson said in an interview with ITK.
Best Metaverse Performance isn’t the only new addition to this year’s VMAs — a ‘Best Longform Video’ category has also been created. Nominations in 22 gender-neutral categories were open for fans to vote since Tuesday.
The MTV VMAs are scheduled to air live from New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Aug. 28.
