OpenSea announced that it has been working with Icy.tools, Curio Tools and Proof to launch an open standard for NFT rarity, which will launch next week on OpenSea.

OpenRarity aims to provide a verifiable, simplified, objective, and mathematically-grounded approach to rarity calculations. More importantly, it is entirely open-source and reproducible by anyone.

The protocol will be released on OpenSea next week and is currently available in beta for downloads through GitHub.

What issues will OpenRarity solve and how?

1. Separate the concepts of rarity, creator ties and market value that assign value attributes and other items independent of scarcity when ranking NFT rarity.

2. Present a single source of truth for consistent rarity rankings across publishers, to replace close-source code and rankings across publishers (tools, marketplaces, etc).

3. Create a fair environment so creators don’t have to pay rarity tool providers to list their collections on their platforms.
